BBC 32. Its all about Wine

2 things spring to mind whenever I think of Blaauwklippen Wine estate: my parents visited it on their honeymoon (I recall seeing a faded picture as a child) and secondly, their Zinfandel! More recently however, I have had the privilege of getting to know Rolf Zeitvogel, Cellar Master and Managing Director thanks to the fantastic Nicolette Waterford.

Nicolette owns Waterford Communications, a boutique communications consultancy that concentrates on managing the reputation of various companies and organisations, predominantly in the wine and tourism sectors.

Nicolette invited me to the announcement of the Winner of the 32nd Blaauwklippen Blending Competition (BBC) on Friday, 4 September.
During the past 32 years the Blaauwklippen Blending Competition has become an institution on the annual wine calendar among wine clubs.

It is one of the oldest wine competitions in South Africa, and also the only competition where the consumer is the deciding factor of what gets bottled.

A superb lunch preceded the announcement and being seated next to Winemaker, Albert Basson, gave me some insight into the whole process of how the wines are sent to entrants directly from the barrel, whereupon their entry blends are then recreated by him in the Cellar.

Rolf was our entertaining master of ceremonies and it was great to see him share his passion and experience with the dynamic team at Blaauwklippen. When not making truly innovative wines, like South Africa's first white Zinfandel, Rolf is a serious foodie and loves cooking.
Prolific and talented artist, Frans Groenewald, sat opposite me and it was fantastic to discover that not only does he have a passion for riding his Vespa through the vineyards but that it is his art that adorns the winning bottle. We decided that a "Wine Scoot" is definitely on the cards... so watch this space!

And so it was time to reveal the winning wine. Selected from 94 entries, this classic, big five Bordeaux blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, 6% Cabernet franc and 4% Malbec was blended by Rindchen's Weinkontor – otherwise known as Team Hamburg from Uhlenhorst, Hamburg in Germany. It is a bold wine that I feel needs a lot of time and so I will be storing mine for at least 5 years before opening.
As always, the triumphant blend will be sold under the Blaauwklippen Barouche label, with reference to the winning wine club on the back label.
